The Business of Opportunity and Empowerment

The Social Enterprise Coalition is delighted to host an all-day event designed to inspire, empower and inform the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community about the business of social enterprise. This event includes a session led by SFEDI Chair, Elsa Caleb.

Social enterprises are dynamic and sustainable businesses driven by a social or environmental purpose. According to the most recent government survey, there are at least 55,000 social enterprises in the UK with a combined turnover of £27billion per year. As the movement continues to grow, the Social Enterprise Coalition is committed to developing and supporting its growth, as well as ensuring the benefits can be enjoyed by all communities. Building community cohesion is at the heart of the social enterprise agenda, therefore the need to empower BAME groups has been identified as a priority.
Following several regional consultations focused on BAME social enterprises and communities this event will reflect upon the lessons learnt, seek to outline the next steps in the development of the consultation process, and identify how government can best engage with BAME social enterprises.
The Coalition’s first national event focusing on BAME will examine the specific issues around BAME-led community organisations: it will highlight the various social enterprise business models, showcase the people behind successful social enterprises and provide opportunities for feedback, discussion and networking.
